NEW DELHI (June 8) XINHUA - India's top scientists have expressed
their concern over possible abuse of genetic research and have
called for creation of an apex national bioethics organization
(NBO) to monitor research being carried out with human genetic
material.
They warned in a recently released document that the latest
advances in genetics research "raise ethical, social,
cultural and legal issues with significant long-term implications
for humanity."
"While genetic studies may provide powerful tools, they are
also prone to abuses which could threaten society," the
scientists said.
In addition to the apex NBO, the document suggested setting up
genetic testing laboratories in each state for providing
diagnostic service and to carry out research on the genetic basis
of unusual diseases encountered in India. Enditem
