VIENNA, June 10 (Reuter) - Austria, already at odds with the
European Union over a unilateral ban on imports of genetically
altered maize, said on Tuesday it was poised to block imports of
genetically modified rapeseed as well.
"The decision has already been taken internally. The
minister will make a formal announcement in the next two to three
weeks," said a spokeswoman for Barbara Prammer, minister for
consumer protection.
She added the ruling was based on Austrian concerns that
genetically modified rapeseed could damage the environment
through cross-pollination.
The news came one day after the European Commission announced it
had approved two genetically modified rapeseed varieties
developed by Hoechst's (HFAG.F) Plant Genetic Systems after the
company agreed to label the products.
"I cannot say how the European Commission will respond. But
Austria is acting within its rights by banning something it
believes could do ecological damage," the spokeswoman said.
Vienna also vowed to stand by a decision outlawing genetically
modified maize. The European Commission said on Monday it would
propose an end to the Austrian import ban, introduced in December
on health grounds.
"We have made it clear we are willing to take the issue to
the European Court of Justice," Environment Minister Martin
Bartenstein said in a statement.
The maize at the centre of the controversy was developed by
Ciba-Geigy (CIGZ.PA) and marketed by Novartis. It is resistant to
the herbicide gluphosinate and the corn-borer pest.
