BRUSSELS (Nov. 21) XINHUA - Greenpeace today blocked a tanker truck containing 35,000 liters of genetically engineered (GE) soya oil, the environmentalist group announced here today.
The block was made in Austria early in the morning after Greenpeace tracked down the import and distribution of the soya oil from the United States to Europe.
The oil was out from a processing mill in Germany to a firm in Austria. Twelve Greenpeace activists chained themselves to the truck, stopping the delivery of the freight.
The genetically engineered cargo of soya was first held up by Greenpeace last week when it tried to enter the Dutch port of Rotterdam.
On Wednesday, Greenpeace's genetic hazard patrol confronted a barge shipment from the Rotterdam cargo that was then tracked to a processing mill in Germany.
Greenpeace activists held up the unloading of the soya at the processing mill on Thursday.
It was at the German mill, owned by the Archers Daniels Midland according to Greenpeace, where the genetically engineered soya was processed into oil and animal fodder.
Greenpeace shadowed tankers transporting the processed oil to Austria. It is tracking four other trucks in the country for shipment of genetically engineered soya oil.
The environmentalist group is campaigning against consumption of genetically engineered food without being informed of the fact. "No consumer in Europe should be force-fed genetically engineered food," said campaigner Michelle Sheather. Enditem
